When life feels overwhelming or we are stalled out we need more than just a friendly ear. We need to know we are gaining new perspective and self-awareness that will lead to meaningful change.
Psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy balances several different beliefs. Emotions are not good or bad, instead they are messages that we are meant to honor. The goal of analysis is to become friends with a range of emotional states instead of attempting to get rid of or change those emotional states. Psychoanalytic thought recognizes that being curious about ourselves will lead to more sustainable ease and satisfaction in life. More than anything, though, Relational Psychoanalytically Informed Psychotherapists understand that being seen and heard is rare medicine in this world and that when we receive this medicine our wounds can heal and our brains can re-wire.
While there are many therapeutic promises of quick fixes for trauma these days, most trauma survivors know that there are no quick fixes for trauma. I am here to be with you while you make sense of what has happened and how it impacts you every day. Neuroscience supports the idea that relational trauma is primarily healed through new repairative relationships. In addition, neuroscience research supports the idea that the nervous system requires time in consistently safe relationship in order to harness the incredible power of neuroplasticity that your brain has gifted you. In addition, talking in safe relationship releases more serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin than most things, including SSRI’s. There is strong support for long term psychodynamic treatment for trauma, especially when we consider complex PTSD.
Most of my clients find me after the quick fixes have failed or barely moved the needle. They often find me after other talk therapies have failed. My training along with my 25 years of experience working with Complex PTST in high intensity and outpatient settings allow me to stay grounded and focused in the midst of the very confusing felt experiences following Complex PTST. While I resist a “specialization” I have found that I am uniquely capable of holding the space needed for healing from Complex PTSD and I am honored to do so.
